What Is Self-Advocacy?

Self-Advocacy is a civil rights movement that was created for and by people with disabilities. The goal of self-advocacy is to equip people with knowledge to make informed, authentic decisions, and to empower them to make those decisions. Self-Advocates speak up for themselves and others, they direct their own lives, understand their rights, make choices and choose the level of support that they desire.

What happens at a Self-Advocacy meeting?

At a self-advocacy meeting, everyone is welcome! All details (rules, time/location, goals) are determined by the group with the support of a facilitator. Meetings may focus on issues of disability rights along with other topics or goals that may interest the group.
